Valerie Bertinelli to play Demi Lovato’s mother in new sitcom “Hungry”

Valerie Bertinelli has joined the cast of the NBC comedy pilot “Hungry,” starring Demi Lovato. Parent company NBCUniversal announced that the sitcom about an eating-disorder support group will feature Bertinelli, 61, as restaurant owner Lisa, the mother and best friend of Lovato’s character, Teddy. Lisa is described as “a warm, loving, self-critical and emotional mess of a woman who has lost and gained the same 30 pounds for 30 years.”  Actors Anna Akana, Alex Brightman, Ashley D. Kelley, Jay Klaitz and Rory O’Malley will portray fellow group members, as they “help each other as they look for love, success and the perfect thing in the fridge that’s going to make it all better.”

NBC cancels supernatural drama ‘Manifest’ after 3 seasons

NBC has canceled the supernatural drama series Manifest after three seasons. Created by Jeff Rake and starring Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, Athena Karkanis, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise and Jack Messina, the series followed the crew and passengers of a missing plane who suddenly reappear after five years. Season 3 ended with a cliffhanger finale just last week.

‘Gone Girl’ actress Lisa Banes dies at 65 after hit-and-run accident in NY

Stage and screen actress Lisa Banes, best known for her roles in Gone Girl and Cocktail, died Monday after a hit-and-run accident in New York City at age 65.  Banes has been hospitalized following the accident on June 4 for severe head trauma.  In a statement, Banes’ manager, David Williams, confirmed the news on Tuesday, saying: “We are heartsick over Lisa’s tragic and senseless passing. She was a woman of great spirit, kindness and generosity and dedicated to her work, whether on stage or in front of a camera and even more so to her wife, family and friends. We were blessed to have had her in our lives.”
