A Lifeguard Helped a Disabled Veteran Go Boogie Boarding

A 64-year-old Army vet named Mike Hicks broke his back about a year-and-a-half ago, so he’s in a wheelchair.  It was some sort of accident, and he’s paralyzed from the waist down.  But he was in Hawaii last week with his wife, and wanted to dip his feet in the ocean.  So a local lifeguard offered to help him out.   His name is Hizson Keali’I, and he’s 45.

He found Mike a beach wheelchair to get across the sand, pushed him down to the water, and Mike got to dip his feet in.  Then he met up with them AGAIN last Wednesday, brought a stand-up paddleboard, and took Mike SURFING.

Technically it was more like boogie boarding.  In the photos, Mike’s lying on the board and catching a wave with a huge smile on his face.

He did an interview with the “Huffington Post” about how great it was, his wife said he made a bucket list a while ago, and one of the things on it was to go surfing.
