A Sinead O’Connor biopic is currently in development from ie: entertainment, the Irish production company behind the 2022 documentary Nothing Compares, as first reported by Variety.
According to Variety, the film will “explore O’Connor’s early life and beginnings in the music industry.” It aims to tell the story of “how one young woman from Dublin took on the world, examining how her global fame may have been built on her talent, but her name became synonymous with her efforts to draw attention to the crimes committed by the Catholic Church and the Irish state.”
Fellow Irish production companies Nine Daughters (Lady MacBeth) and See-Saw Films (The Power of the Dog) are co-producing the biopic, which has been in the works since 2022. It will be directed by English filmmaker Josephine Decker (Shirley) from a script penned by Irish writer Stacey Gregg. The project does not yet have a title or announced cast.
O’Connor died in 2023 at the age of 56. She is remembered not only as a trailblazing singer behind the smash hit “Nothing Compares 2 U,” but also as an outspoken activist who took on corruption in the Catholic Church and sexism in the music industry.
