Rush have announced a 40th anniversary edition of their 1984 album Grace Under Pressure, out March 13th.
Continuing UMe/Mercury and Anthem Records’ Rush reissue campaign, the Grace Under Pressure box sets cull original album tracks, an alternate 2025 mix by Terry Brown — commissioned by Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee — as well as era-specific concert recordings and Dolby Atmos mixes.
Five configurations are available: (1) Super Deluxe Edition 4-CD + Blu-ray, (2) Super Deluxe Edition 5-LP + Blu-ray, (3) Super Deluxe Digital Edition, (4) Dolby Atmos Digital Edition, and (5) the Grace Under Pressure Tour: Live in Toronto 1984 live footage, which will hit video streaming services.
The Super Deluxe Editions house everything, plus a 52-page hardcover book containing liner notes by Geddy Lee — the first liners he’s ever penned for a RUSH reissue. The LPs in the Super Deluxe Edition were cut at Abbey Road Studios and pressed on 180-gram audiophile black vinyl at GZ Media in the Czech Republic. Other ephemera includes new illustrations and re-imagined artwork by Hugh Syme; a custom acrylic Grace Under Pressure LED light-up display; a replica of the Grace Under Pressure tour book; a replica Maple Leaf Gardens/Toronto show concert ticket; a “Grace Under Pressure Tour” total access backstage pass; “Pressure Release,” a replica of the 6-page press release; three band member live photo lithos; and a poster from the Toronto show.
“Our songwriting had taken us to a different musical place,” said Geddy Lee of the album in a press release, “an expansion of our soundscape with a range of new technologies, not just keyboards and samples, but electronic drums too, while getting to know the new dude behind the console with a very different working style.”
Regarding audio specifics, the first disc in the Super Deluxe Edition features the album’s original 1984 stereo mix, newly remastered from the original analog stereo master tapes by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios. The second disc features Terry Brown’s new alternate mix — an interesting bit of revisionist history, as Grace Under Pressure was the first RUSH studio album not produced by Brown after a decade-long run alongside the band. Meanwhile, the Blu-ray touts 48kHz/24-bit Dolby Atmos, 96kHz/24-bit Dolby TrueHD 5.1, and 96kHz/24-bit PCM stereo options for the live tracks — including 37 minutes of previously unreleased performances — and the two album mixes.
“Listening to Grace Under Pressure in Atmos, you can really hear Rush’s progress and development as artists, because there’s much more room in the 360-degree soundfield to express it,” said producer/engineer Richard Chycki, who handled the Atmos mixes. “Things that may have just gone by you in stereo now appear in separate speakers without being gimmicky. Instead, they act as micro-features for the Atmos listener to better appreciate the band’s intent.”
