66% of Gen Z’ers Are Teaching Themselves New Job Skills with YouTube

The job market really is . . . SOMETHING, and if you’re just sitting around waiting, you’re falling behind.

According to a new report, young people are devoting a lot of time to teaching THEMSELVES new job skills, using online tutorials on YouTube and even TikTok.  This is stuff like coding, A.I., spreadsheets, models, and design.

It’s cheaper than taking an actual accredited course, and it’s also more convenient.  And 71% of hiring managers believe skills learned through informal online platforms ARE credible.

Some companies DO admit that VERIFYING skills is harder when someone’s self-taught, rather than having a certificate or test score from a more established, formal education.  But 18% of hiring managers say, to them, a candidate that’s self-taught stands out MORE, provided they can back it up.

Not surprisingly, this trend is being led by young adults.  66% of Gen Z’ers report teaching themselves skills online, compared to 50% of Millennials, 35% of Gen X’ers and just 20% of Boomers.  Men (53%) are also more likely than women (40%) to include self‑taught skills on their résumés.
