Daylight Saving Time starts this Sunday and we spring forward an hour. So, enjoy your internal clock being scrambled again.
There’s been a lot of debate about doing away with the clock-shifting thing completely. British Columbia announced this week they’re shifting to permanent Daylight Saving Time. They’ll spring forward on Sunday and leave it that way.
Now a NEW idea is in the mix. But is it a good one? Or would it just make things even worse?
A Florida congressman thinks we should all do HALF-Daylight Saving Time and permanently shift the clocks up 30 minutes. (???)
Republican Congressman Greg Steube introduced the bill last month. It’s called the Daylight Act of 2026. The idea is you’d split the difference. We’d keep some of the late-day light people like, but winter mornings wouldn’t be quite so dark.
The obvious downside is we’d be 30 minutes off from the WHOLE WORLD.
It’s not unheard of. “Afghanistan Time” works like that. When it’s 3:00 p.m. in New York, it’s 12:30 a.m. in Kabul. (At least until Sunday, when New York springs forward.)
A few other spots do it too, but it’s not common.
Because of that, it sounds like the half-Daylight idea probably won’t happen. So don’t worry about it too much.
One expert said they appreciate the “willingness to explore alternatives.” But switching to permanent Standard or Daylight Time is just a much simpler solution.
