Gas prices are soaring, on average, they’re up $1.00 per gallon across the country in the last 30 days alone. And it might not even be the best-quality gas.
There’s a RUMOR on social media that gas is being DILUTED to stretch the supply, and drivers are noticing a drop in gas mileage.
A lot of social media posts like this are fake news, but there’s potentially some truth to this one, or at least there COULD be.
Last week, the EPA announced they’re planning to tweak the rules on May 1st, to allow more gas stations to cut gasoline with ethanol. That makes it cheaper, but it also yields less power, and worse fuel economy in your engine.
They say the idea is “fortifying the domestic fuel supply”, and that it’s only a TEMPORARY thing, from May 1st to May 20th.
But before you get too worked up about this, this isn’t new.
Gas formulas often shift based on season, and this cheaper gas doesn’t have a noticeable impact on most newer cars, But it is harsher on the environment, because it creates more smog in hot weather.
So basically, this is more about relaxing environmental rules to try to keep gas prices down during the Iran war. That said, it SHOULD be cheaper, by about 25 cents, because it is less powerful and less efficient.
