1. “Star Wars” droid R2-D2’s name came from sound editor Walter Murch, during the post-production of George Lucas’s 1973 movie “American Graffiti”, when Murch asked for “Reel 2, Dialogue Track 2” as “R2-D2.”
Lucas was in the room, working on the script for “Star Wars” at the time. He heard the request, asked what Murch meant by R2-D2, and said that would be a great name.
2. The animals responsible for the most deaths in the U.S. are farm animals . . . insects like hornets, wasps, and bees, and dogs.
3. Traditional battleships are no longer used by any navy worldwide. Most were decommissioned following World War Two, but the U.S. maintained four that were in and out of service until the 1990s. (But back in December, the U.S. Navy announced their intent to build a new class of battleships.)
4. Bell peppers and many spicy chilies are the same species. Bell peppers just have a mutation that makes them incapable of producing the chemical capsaicin, which gives chilies their fieriness.
5. The gin and tonic was invented in the early 19th century to make antimalarial medication more palatable.
