Empty nesters: Do you still have BOXES of your kids’ stuff, that they left when they moved out and STILL haven’t come back for? Of course you do. The real question is: How many TRUCK-LOADS is it?
According to a survey, 92% of young adults have left their belongings with their parents when they moved out. For some, it may just be old clothes, and school stuff. For others, it’s literally an ENTIRE ROOM full of stuffed animals.
41% of young adults say they kept stuff with their parents for “safekeeping”, 25% say they are just storing stuff at home for later, and 74% say their parents “don’t mind” holding onto old things, indefinitely.
But 21% admit they’ve been hassled by their parents to come home and collect their belongings. Possibly with empty threats about them being thrown away.
So how much do parents HATE having all that crap? Well, that’s the thing . . .
44% of parents say they believe their kid will eventually come back for all their stuff. 58% say they don’t mind holding onto everything, since they have the space for it. And 30% admit that they LIKE having their kids’ stuff, since it gives a reason for their kids to come back home.
On average, young adults leave NINE boxes at home with their parents after moving out, and 27% say they currently have “no plans” to collect their junk.
In fact, 23% say they’ve “completely forgotten” about the existence of those left-behind items, and don’t even know what’s in any of those boxes.
