Five Everyday Foods and Drinks That Are Damaging Your Health

If you’ve been slacking on healthy food choices this summer, here’s a list of five foods and drinks you should think about cutting out sooner rather than later . . .

1.  Potato chips.  We know they’re not a health food, but they’re easy to reach for and overdo when we’re hungry.  They’re also loaded with salt and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to high blood pressure and other health issues.

2.  Diet sodas.  They don’t have the sugar content of real soda, but some artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas may interfere with our gut health and insulin sensitivity.  It’s also bad for your teeth, just like the regular stuff.

3.  Alcohol.  Frequent alcohol consumption can strain your liver, disrupt your sleep, and increase your risk of certain cancers.  Even small amounts can add up over time.

4.  Sweetened coffee drinks.  Giant flavored lattes and Frappuccinos can pack in more calories and sugar than an actual dessert.

5.  Frozen meals.  They’re usually loaded with sodium and saturated fat, which can cause increased blood pressure, water retention, inflammation, and kidney strain.  There’s also growing evidence that heating up certain plastics, even “microwave-safe” ones, can leach chemicals into our bodies.
