Five Random Facts for Wednesday

Here are some random facts for you.

1.  Spelling bees are mostly unique to the English language due to its spelling irregularities.  Other languages, like Hindi, Italian, German, and Turkish, have highly phonetic writing systems, with a virtually one-to-one ratio of letters to sound, which makes “spelling” predictable.

2.  About two million years ago, there was a species of rodents that were as big as hippopotamuses.

3.  (Careful) Scientists can use one circumcised foreskin, which is about the size of a stamp, to grow almost four ACRES of skin that can be transplanted onto burn victims.

4.  From colonial times until World War Two, May 1st was called Moving Day in New York City, and it was a tradition for millions of people to move at 9:00 A.M. on that day.

5.  The first recorded sandwich in history was made by a rabbi named Hillel the Elder for Passover in the first century B.C.  It was a mix of nuts, apples, spices, and wine in between two pieces of matzah.
