There’s an Outside Chance Aliens Make First Contact Today

This could really throw a wrench in your Halloween plans.   A bunch of sites are claiming ALIENS could make first contact today.  (???)  Or, there’s an outside chance of it.

If you’re not up on your UFO news:  An interstellar comet from outside our solar system has been zipping past us the last few months.  It’s only the third one we’ve ever seen, and it’s big.

Experts think it’s about the size of Manhattan, and it’s different than normal comets.  So the “X-Files” crowd thinks maybe it’s a MOTHERSHIP.

It’s millions of miles away right now, on the other side of the sun.  So why is TODAY the day?  Basically, it’s when it reaches its closest point to the sun, an event called perihelion.  (pair-uh-HEEL-ee-un)

If it’s aliens, today’s the best day for them to change course by firing their boosters and using the sun’s gravity like a slingshot.  And if they know we’re watching, they might want to reach out to say “hi”, or maybe DESTROY us.

A guy at Harvard named Avi Loeb has been pushing the alien theory.  He joked last month that if you’re planning a vacation, maybe go BEFORE the 29th.  (He said it on Mayim Bialik’s podcast.  Here’s the clip.)

He didn’t REALLY predict they’d make first contact today, the Internet exaggerates.  His point is they could be back there behind the sun doing who knows what.  And we’re now in the window of when they’d maybe reach out.

The comet’s been behind the sun for a few weeks, and we won’t be able to see it again for a month or more.  So even if it does change course, we probably won’t know for a while.  (Unless a Jupiter probe gets a peek at it next week.)

Fans of the theory think there’s a chance the ship already released probes, and they’re on their way here.  But really, there’s no reason to think today is any more likely than tomorrow, or any other day.
