Remember the episode of “Seinfeld” where Kramer gets the vanity license plates that say, “ASSMAN”? Believe it or not, that originally aired 31 years ago this week. (!!!)
That got someone thinking, “Can I get that license plate myself?” Maybe to reference that episode, or because they have some junk in their “trunk”, or because they’re a proctologist.
The person looked into various state laws, and here’s what they found:
Unfortunately, having that license plate is banned in most states, apparently because it’s a little vulgar. 31 states won’t allow it at all. Another 11 states would “probably” prohibit it, but it’s not 100% definitive.
Beyond those, another five states MIGHT allow it. It’s not explicitly forbidden, but you’d have to ask at the DMV and see for yourself. Those are: Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Connecticut.
Two more states DO allow it, but the plate is already taken. Those are South Dakota and Maine.
Finally, there’s one state that DOES allow it, AND it was available. That’s Vermont. One person online joked, “The Vermont DMV site will be crashing in a few minutes.”
Well, it WAS. One commenter on the person’s post says that it’s suddenly showing up as TAKEN in Vermont, just three days after this post was made. If true, that was quick.
(You can find more about the “research,” here.)
(Here’s an UNCENSORED montage from that scene in “Seinfeld”. To be clear: They do say “ASSMAN”.)
