Everyone has heard people making jokes about foreign words that sound, uh, FUNNY, when translated in their language or culture. But this story goes well beyond that.
A man in Florida named Julian Becerra went to a Vietnamese restaurant last month with a naughty-sounding name.
It’s called “Bích Nga” (pronounced “bik ny-ah”), which loosely translates to “beautiful jade.” But obviously, the way it’s spelled, b-i-c-h [space] n-g-a, looks amusing in English to some people.
Julian went to the place because of the name to see how good the food was, and he was BLOWN AWAY. He said, “Have you ever had a meal that was made purely with love? Well, if you haven’t, you just witnessed one.”
And get this: The owner, an older woman named Mrs. Lieng, insisted that the meal was FREE, because he was the first customer in hours, and she enjoyed chatting with him. On top of that, she sternly refused any tips.
Julian posted on TikTok about the place, and he was so touched by the meal, Mrs. Lieng, and the response online that he went back.
He sat down with Mrs. Lieng. And found out: She’s widowed, has had a stroke, and is essentially homeless. She stays with a friend, and still comes to work every day, with a positive, happy attitude.
So, Julian set up a GoFundMe to raise money for Mrs. Lieng to move into an apartment. And it has raised more than $190,000. (!!!)
Julian was shocked by the response. He says the money is not buying her a mansion. Just a modest place near the restaurant, where her rent and utilities could be covered for a while, plus the security deposit, and basic needs.
Mrs. Lieng’s granddaughter has shared her heartfelt thanks to all the people donating online. She said, “My grandma has gone through so much to keep this restaurant open because she loves sharing our family’s story, our culture, and the recipes that have been passed down through generations.”
Then went on to say, “I don’t think words can fully express how much this means to our family. Your support means EVERYTHING!”
